Peoplefit Corner - Chondromalacia Patella
What is Chondromalacia Patella / /Patellofemoral Syndrome?
Chondromalacia patella refers to structural changes in the cartilage on the underside of the kneecap (patella). The condition may occur at any age and affects women somewhat more than men. The discomfort associated with chondromalacia can often be felt at the front of the knee and there may be a cracking or popping sensation with knee movement. Activities such as prolonged sitting may cause an aching stiffness and squatting or descending stairs may provoke discomfort.
What causes Chondromalacia?
The mechanism of this disorder can develop from an acute injury, such as a direct blow to the knee, but more likely is unrelated to a specific event or trauma. Abnormal movement or tracking of the patella along the surface of the femur (thigh bone) as the knee bends and straightens can expose the patella cartilage to abnormal wear.
How to treat Chondromalacia Patella
An exercise program involving specific stretching and strengthening exercises of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles often significantly reduces the symptoms associated with this condition. In addition, a patella stabilizing brace or taping of the patella in proper position can provide significant relief. A physical therapist is able to design and implement a specific treatment program.
Surgery is sometimes recommended for the small percentage of patients who do not respond to conservative treatment. Surgery can involve smoothing the cartilage surface of the patella and/or realignment of the patella-quadriceps complex.
