Peoplefit Corner - Exercise and the Brain

The evidence continues to mount that physical exercise can maintain and improve brain health. In fact, a recent meta-analysis of 18 studies has shown that those who exercised regularly in middle age were two-thirds less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease as those who did not exercise. Even those who began exercising in their sixties reduced the risk of developing the disease by half. So, how much exercise do you need? One study involved only 20 to 60 minutes of fast walking several times per week.

How is it that exercise improves brain function? One study has shown that exercise increases blood flow, and therefore nourishment, to the brain. Exercise may also improve brain function by improving the health of the cardiovascular system. An improved cardiovascular system means that there will be less heart attacks and strokes that can cause brain damage. Finally, exercise causes the release of certain proteins that are necessary to increase the connections between brain cells.

The exact method of how exercise improves brain health is still being uncovered. What is becoming more and more clear however is that exercise significantly improves brain health.
