Peoplefit Corner - Diabetes and the Role of Resistance Exercise
For those with Diabetes who are interested in dealing effectively with their condition, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has a wonderful website at www.diabetes.org. I have utilized information from their website to discuss the role of resistance exercise in the treatment of this disease.
In addition to building strong bones and muscles, resistance exercise has also been shown to improve insulin sensitivity. The increased sensitivity results in more effective blood sugar regulation. In fact, resistance exercise has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity to a similar degree as aerobic exercise. According to the ADA, "Indeed, performing both aerobic and resistance exercise may be more beneficial than either type of activity alone."
The ADA and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) "advise that resistance exercise be included in fitness programs for adults with type 2 diabetes." Resistance exercise should be performed two times per week and should include all major muscle groups. A minimum of one set of 10-15 repetitions is also recommended. As always, remember to start slowly and watch for joint discomfort. For specific exercises, a physical therapist or exercise physiologist can be of assistance.
