Peoplefit Corner - Core Strengthening
What is Core Strengthening?
Your body's core is the area around your trunk and pelvis, and is where your center of gravity is located. A strong core increases the protection of your back, controls movement and improves posture. Core strength refers to the muscles of your abdominals (transverse abdominis, external obliques, internal obiques and rectus abdominis) and back (erector spinae). By strengthening your core muscles, you can improve your posture, decrease back pain and reduce the risk for muscle injury. Core muscles provide support to your spine for any activity that you do, for example, lifting an object, climbing stairs.
There are many exercises for core strengthening, such as, bridging and abdominal crunches. The fitness ball is great tool for strengthening core muscles, as well as improving your balance and coordination. Body alignment is important when performing core strengthening exercises, therefore it's important to have a fitness trainer or physical therapist help you perfect your technique.
