Peoplefit Corner - Cancer and Exercise
A new report was recently released that links lifestyle choices with cancer prevention. The 2006-2007 Annual Report by the President’s Cancer Panel, is entitled "Promoting Healthy Lifestyles- Policy, Program, and Personal Recommendations for Reducing Cancer Risk." The report found adequate clinical research to clearly link a reduction in breast and colon cancer with getting regular exercise. An individual can clearly lower their risk of developing cancer by avoiding tobacco, increasing exercise, eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight.
Similarly the American Cancer Society came out with Guidelines on Nutrition and Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention in 2006. They make four recommendations for individuals to follow to help reduce their risk of developing cancer:
1. Maintain a healthy weight throughout life
2. Adopt a physically active lifestyle
3. Consume a healthy diet, with an emphasis on plant sources
4. If you drink alcoholic beverages, limit consumption
The American Cancer Society also states, "Evidence suggests that one third of the 550,000 cancer deaths that occur in the United States are due to unhealthy diet and insufficient physical activity" [CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians Sept. 2006]. That means that there is the potential to save 183,000 lives annually through eating an appropriate diet and getting the recommended daily exercise.
While none of the government or American Cancer Society recommendations are new to people trying to live a healthy lifestyle, the research now clearly links how living such a lifestyle can improve not just the quality of your life, but the length of your life.
